Our ever-vigilant members have brought the following items to our
attentlon:
L In the December 1996 article "Using your Sense and Senses to Test
Materials:, it was erroneously stated that "when testing casein buttons with a
red hot needle, there is the characteristic smell ofburnt hom or hair". Jocelyn
Howells and Roxane Russell, both of Oregon, have pointed out that the odor
is burnt milk. In fact, the comprehensive article on casein buttons in the May
1995 Bulletin does indeed sayjust that. The source forthe Sense and Senses
article was taken from earlier publications and, as we know, sometimes
mistakes were made. We are pleased to publish the correct information again.
2. On another topic, Roxane Russell has an update on two fable buttons
originally published in the July 1991 Bulletin. On page 133, there is an article
entitled "A Sequel to Fable Buttons". Two buttons pictured together in the
middle of the page were identified as possibly being from the fable "The Fox
and the Stork". Roxane identifies the button on the left as "The Crow and the
Pitcher" and the one on the right as "The Lion and the Mouse", both from
Aesop's Fables.
To quote Roxane's letter "The National Button Bulletin is a valuable
reference tool. It would be appropriate and desirable for corrections to be
made for the benefit of all collectors." We agree.
We think our conespondents are wonderful and we certainly applaud
their attention to the Bulletins.
We always welcome new information from our members. It means you
are reading the Bulletin very carefully and that's always good news to us!
