ATTENTION: Paisley Collectors and Judges
A discussion of the Paisley class will be held at the Classification Meeting dur-
ing the National Convention on Wednesday at 6:30 pm. The illustrations and
history of the Paisley pattern presented in this article are intended to facilitate
that discussion. If you are a Pattern collector, please study these examples,
attend the meeting and share your thoughts.
A request has been received to expand the current definition to include
plain faced motifs with no decoration requirement. Although awards
presently may be written to include these, the following revised definition will
be presented for a vote at the Classification Meeting:
Paisley. A pattern containing one or more paisley motifs that are usually
comma- or curved teardrop-shaped. The motif contains and/or is surrounded by
some amount of decoration, ranging from simple dots or wispy strokes to stylized
plant forms or scrolls, reflecting its origins in the traditional ornate Indian (later
Scottish) paisley pattern. Awards may be written to include unadorned motifs.
A yin-yang is not appropriate here.
