EIGHTEENTH CENTURY BRASS BUTTON MOLD WITH
SIGNATURE AND DATE
The mold illustrated is a t'are specimen. Its uniqueness lies in the
fact that it is both dated and inscribed with a name. The hand engJraved
inscription, "HaDes Mijlinger 1755" is centered aDd seems to have been the
flrst name on the mold. Possibly the second name "Jacob Melinger" rtu'as
that of a descendant of the li|st, the suliiame, being the Auglicized version
of the Ge|nan.
The method of urolding or casting pe\Mter l)uttons is exactly the same
as recortled in the BUTTON BULLETINS, for 1946, January, pp. 40-44 and
October p.306. This latter mold bears the signature "T'Badman Fecit."
Numerous brass molds bear the initials "I M ". We do want to record here,
