                "The following list of button-makers  !s compiled almost  from Mr. Dudley
             Westropp's  list. The notes are put into rough chronological  order.  The dates are
             those of the Direetories,  newspapers  and other sourc€s in which notices of names
             appear."
             1698     West, Edwarat,  button-maker of Fishamble  Street, was a Church-
                         warden of St. John's  in 1698.
             L7t7     Coates. Samuel
             1?31     Stanley, Chris,  die-sinker, supplied a corporation  seal to Dr. Stevens
                         Hospital for 10 Pounds on 28th of May 1731, as appears  by his
                         original receipted  bill still preserved in the Board Room of the
                         Hospital.
             t732-L764 Ponty, James, was with Maculla  (q.v.) and set up for himseu at tJre
                         'spinning Wheel,'  Back Lane, about 1732 and was afterwards at
                         the 'T\vo Brass Fountains' in the same street.  'He makes  plain
                         treble gilt buttons on ivory moulds.'  Died  1?64. Maculla, James,
                         Pewterer and brazier, lived in Back Lane, and was succeeded
                         there by Jn. Banfleld,  who died in l7?1.
             1?33-1?60 Roche, John,  Usher's Street, 'makes gilt and plated buttons  and gilt
                         and  plated  buttons on ivory moulds.' Died 1760.  (See  Appendix.)
             1?,45-1?8? King, AntJrony, 'sells gilt buttons and silvered buttons  on moulds.'
                         (Pne's Occuranc€s.)  Dec. 24, 1745. Anthony  King, brazier, lived
                         in Cook street.  He was knighted when  Sheriff of the City in 1?69
                         for the couraeie displayed  by him in capturing a fugitive  felon
                         'whom  he pursued  through subterraneous  rece$ses  of the Poddle
                         Watercourse'  (See Irish Builder' June 1, 1886). King married a
                         Sarah  Atkinson. He died Sept.  1?8?, and is buried in the grave-
                         yard between St. Andeon's  (?)  Church and the City Wall. On his
                         gravestone  was an inscription  commemorating  his spirited exer-
                         tions as a Magistrate and his charity to the poor. King made the
                         beautiful  brass balusters  and the rail on the great staircase  at
                         Casletown Co. Kildare.
                      Clark, George,  Seal engraver,  Crane-lane 1748. He cut a silver seal
                         for the Rotunda Hospital in 1758 which is still preserved  in the
                         Hospital.  He is mentioned  as a toy-seller and seal engtaver in
                         Wilson's Dublin Dir.ectory for 1765, and advertised from  'T'he
                         Golden  Ring', Crane-la.ne in 1?52 as a  jeweler  and seal-cutter.
             1751-1805  Mossop,  William,  Medalist.  (See  Appendix.)
             1760     Foulkes.  Willian, GiIt and silver button-maker.  Died f?60, business
                         carried on by his daughter Katherine.
             1?60-1?85 BiUinS,  Thomas,  Laceman,  13-14 Cork-hill.
             1?86-1?87  Billing,  Thomas,  anil Theobald, lace-merchants.  Cork-hill.
             1?88-1?92  Billing, Theobald, lace-merchant  and button manufacturer,  2 Cork-
                         hill. 'T. Billing' on Armagh  Militia buttons, flat, plated copper
                         1793.
             1?96-1?99  BiUing,  Ma,ry, lace-merchant  and button manufacturer,  2 Cork-hill.
             1?62-1780  Ormiston,  John, in Cornmarket and I  Usher's  Island.  'Makes  num-
                         bered army buttons.' Adv't Nov. 11, 1?69.
             1??1     Manly, James, Castle St., 'Makes buttons equal in colour to gold.'
