V}:aturally,I wanted to see them, but this
collection was in a huge mess! At this point I
offered to sorl and package the buttons so all
would know what was there, and she agreed.
In the bottom of one of the two large boxes
was a small collection of German uniform
buttons, including one-piece Crown buttons,
some other unifonn and WWII military
buttons. In looking at the backmarks a small
light began to shine in my dim brain I have
seen this unusual backmark before! I went
home and immediately looked for my button
box, and to complete the story -
- - /a'
tl found the matching Great Seal button
which is illustrated here. It was fortunate also that one of the German buttons
had the identifying backmark "Assmann & Sohne/Liidenschied" which is
now West Germany. The back of this button is bilevel and double shanked,
-
and as I understand it it was a coat button designed to help support either a
machine gun or carry it's ammunition. Hopefully I have presented enough
evidence here to suppoft my case.

Attention State Button Societies!
Ifyour state has a button available for sale to our general
membership, please have your secretary list it with the list of
officers, number of bulletins, dues, etc. for publication in our
July Directory. A brief description and price should be given
also. (This idea was suggested by Virginia Leeman, Michigan
State President.)
