Henry Thomas Aiken (1785-1851), "Fishing in
a Punf', The National Sports of Great Britain:
fifty engravings with descriptions. D. Appleton,
New York, 1825.
An 1840s partial set, brass with rococo scrolls
and shells in the border, typical of these late
sets. Unlike most early sets, it includes an otter,
squirrel and a fisherman. Note in the print
above, the 'compleate' angler with comfy chair
and top hat. Back mark: "Superior Extra Rich."
Size 7/S" (22mm)
A very elegant English horn sporting set with ornate border,
circa late 1840s. Sets were made with the border painted or
plain. Back mark: "Ingrams Patent." Size: 1" (25mm)
Heavy gilt from a set by an American manufacturer. Back mark: "Robinson's Extra" on a ribbon. These are
restruck buttons; there are faint remains of a previous back mark. Restriking English button was a not un-
common practice by early American manufacturers. Circa 1826-28. Size: 7fs" (22mm). The fashion was
for plain coat buttons at the time, so perhaps it was these plain buttons which were being restruck.
