May 2008 THE NATIONAL 'BuTTon BULLETIN 59
From the Editor
When the word spread that Jocelyn Howells was heavily committed with the care
of her husband as he was going through medical treatments, there was an out
pouring of concern from her button friends. Vicky Mayhall asked if there was
anything she could do to help. Yes, there was. Joss asked if she would be able to
write her "Material Matters" column for the May Bulletin. Without hesitation,
Vicky agreed. She chose leather as her subject and enthusiastically dived into the
research, scanning and writing. Others contributed more button images. The
result is a thorough overview of this very versatile "Other Materials, Unlisted" that
will take you way beyond summer camp leathercraft projects. After "living with"
this article for a month, I couldn't wait to get to the Ohio Spring Show to find a
lovely leather button. Actually, I found two!
Vicky's outreach to a member many states away says so much about our
National Button Society. Claudia Conway stepped up to write last December's
"Jet" article for Joss-and Susan Porter and Angie Talaber did the near impossible
in keeping NBS running smoothly when Lois Pool couldn't handle her duties. The
button collectors I've met are very vital, inquisitive, knowledgeable, caring and fun
to be with. Many contribute selflessly to this Bulletin and to help maintain our
Society. Many have become my very close friends, even if we meet just once a year.
Button "buds" are the best!
