Nov.-Dec., 1966 NATIONAL BIIITON BULLETIN 26I
TIIE ACTING EDITOR'S BEPORT
Making a Report as Acting Editor of National Button Bulletin ts a difiicult
task for me. We need not dwell on the reason it is difiicult, for that is well
known-
With the printing of November-December Bu,Uetin, Volurne 24 wiU be com-
pleted. Little did any of us realize when we were togeth€r in Cleveland that
wittrin a few shorb weeks the resporsibility of editing National's bi-montily pub-
lic.ation would be mine. I{ard work and more hours t}ra,n I care to reca.ll have
been devoted to the Cask.
Much gratitude go€s to Editorial Consultant, Jane Ford Adams; to Secretarry,
Ruttl Mccreight; and to A. I{. 'Dewy" Albert, who has been a, tower of stre, ngth
in many ways, but mosL of all with his errcouraging wolds and understanding.
Please remeanber that he completocl tho JanuaJry Bulletin for the press.
There are many who deserve recognition-Publication MaD"ager James R.
Bower who performs more services for N.B.S. than can be listed here; Paul
Conlin, Advertising Manager; the Contributing Editors whose work covers so
m&ny areas of our Bulletin; the Chairmen of the different Committees whose
efiorbs are ch.anneled into the Bulletin. Credit is given to each a,rrd every one of
thern, aJrd to ttrem a deep appreciadon is expressed.
We trave published a new booklet "Pictoarial Overall Buttons" which is on
sale at this Annual Meeting, and is meeting with great approval. Sales have
er(ceeded expectation. As the new publication goes on sale oux first booklet "The
Black Glass Classification" bows out of print.
The second hstallment of Margareb F. Kelso's "Revis€d Classification of
Pearl and Shell Buttons" wa.s published irr the September-October issue. It now
appears certain that the China Classification in book form will be publistred irr
1966.
It has boen my desire to glve the Bulletin my best, aJId the issues will have
to speak for themselves. I would like for you ta know that at the beg'iruring of
tJre year our N.B.S. Tlea.surer, Mr. Pierce, was informed that no remuneration
for my services as Acting-Editor would be accepted in 1965. Mr. Alberi also
donated his December work on the January Bulletin.
There is an earnest E'ish on my part, that when the Editor's Report is read
in I(a.nsas City next year, ttrat a pormanent Editor will read it; ttrat a qualifled,
dedicated person will have consented to take over the duties of editing our
BuLletin.
Respectf ully submitted,

n,EPOBT OF TEE COMPETITIVE CLASSIFICATION COMMITTEE
Minor reorganization was effected so that Section 3 of Divisions I and III-A
would conform more closely to the educational classincation of Clear and Colored
Glass. I\[Io superfluous sections were removed from Division III-8. Several notes
were added to the Glossary to aid in the clariflcation of a number of classes.
The Board of Directors reconsidered in part its decision at Cleveland to defer
action on the proposed complete reorganization of the classincation. It had been
proposed that as simple a means &s possible be provided for preparing entries
without consideration of the age factor (unless desired by specialization). In June,
the announcement was made of a new competitive division (Itf) which, in efiect,
allows, the use of old and modern buttons together for the flrst time, and its trial
run was made this year. Entries indicate that there is int€rest irx this direction
but that more development is indiceted.
For the Committee,
TIIOMAS W. OWENS, JR,.
